Disease Reports of Note During Q2 2018

The following is a selection of reports through the press. This does not include all outbreaks. It should be noted that more reports will be expected from countries with better surveillance systems and frequency of reporting does not provide an indication of prevalence.

Africa

Algeria OIE reported foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), serotype O.
Botswana OIE detected foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). Serotype is not yet identified.
Chad Guinea worm has been found in dog population. Although only 30 human cases of Guinea worm were found last year, over 800 Chadian dogs have been infected. It’s important to note that the worm does not transmit directly from humans to dogs or vice versa, but dogs may carry the worms into ponds from which people drink, which is how humans are normally infected. The worms began emerging from dogs in Chad six years ago, and now 32 years of work to eradicate the disease is under threat.
Ghana OIE reported highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5 following the illegal movement of birds.
Kenya  A new strain of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) reported by the OIE. Serotype O, topotype EA.
Kenya OIE reported suspicion of Rift Valley fever (RVF). Deaths of camelidae are being investigated. The epidemiological background is that the area has experienced rainfall above normal and increased mosquito population, and human cases have been reported in the region.
Mozambique OIE reported possible case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), based on clinical observation.
South Africa OIE alerted Rift Valley fever (RVF) outbreak. This is the first reported outbreak in the country since 2011. The disease was identified in sheep.
Swaziland OIE reported African horse sickness (AHS), serotype 7. The stable was located in a game reserve where the horses are in close proximity to wild equids.
Togo Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 reported by the OIE.
Zambia  OIE reported foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak. Serotype is not yet identified.
Zimbabwe Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) reported by the OIE. The outbreak followed the illegal movement of animals and occurred along the border with Mozambique.

Asia

Bhutan OIE reported peste des petits ruminants (PPR), last seen in the country in 2015. Suspected to be introduced by illegal movement of animals.
China New case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) reported by the OIE in Shanxi.
China OIE reported highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N6 in Hong Kong, nonpoultry wild bird case identified in a Crested Myna.
China OIE reported foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), serotype O, outbreak affected cattle. Source identified as legal movement of animals; infected cattle were transported from Linxia county to Hami city, in the neighbouring province of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
China  H7N9 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected.
China OIE reported foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), serotype O, outbreak in swine.
China  Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H7N9 reported by the OIE.
China OIE reported foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), serotype O, in Anhui.
China Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 reported by the OIE.
Mongolia Reports from Mongolia indicate two strains of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus circulating, namely O/ME-SA/PanAsia and O/ME-SA/Ind-2001d. There have been 15 new outbreaks this year.
Myanmar OIE reported foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), serotype O, outbreak.
Nepal OIE reported highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1, affecting a commercial flock of layers initially then spreading to domestic ducks. Stamping out has started.

Europe

Armenia OIE reported a case of rabies.
Bulgaria First occurrence of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) in the country has been reported by the OIE. The outbreak was in the Yambol region, approximately 20 km from Turkey. Control measures have been taken, as provided in Directive 92/119/EEC, with stamping out of the infected herds and preventive culling of all other small ruminants reared in the village.
Denmark OIE reported low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) H5. A restricted zone has been established around the holding where subclinical disease was detected.
Estonia OIE reported infectious haematopoietic necrosis affecting rainbow trout. This is the first occurrence of the disease in the country.
Finland OIE reported highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), H5N6 virus identified in a white-tailed eagle.
Germany OIE reported a subclinical case of equine infectious anaemia (EIA).
Greece OIE reported equine infectious anaemia (EIA). First report of the disease in the country since 2016, and this was picked up by serological examination after transport.
Greece Report of reemergence during 2017 of West Nile fever (WNF) amongst humans, including spread to new areas.
Hungary A case of anthrax has been reported by the OIE.
Hungary OIE reported first occurrence of African swine fever (ASF) in the country. The virus was picked up in a sample taken from a dead wild boar.
Hungary OIE reported anthrax.
Kazakhstan OIE reported rabies, identified in a fox.
Latvia Cross-border simulation against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and lumpy skin disease (LSD) took place at the beginning of May.
Moldova OIE reported African swine fever (ASF), detected for the first time in the country.
Norway A case of rabies was reported by the OIE. This is the first recording of rabies in the country since 2012, and was in an arctic fox off the mainland. The fox was killed by a dog.
Norway OIE reported European foulbrood of honey bees.
Romania OIE reported European foulbrood of honey bees.
Romania Koi herpesvirus (KHV) disease reported by the OIE.
Russia OIE reported sheep and goat pox (SGPX) in sheep. Capri pox was last reported in the country in 2016.
Russia Reoccurrence of African swine fever (ASF) reported by the OIE.
Russia OIE reported recurrence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5.
Ukraine OIE reported recurrence of African swine fever (ASF).
Ukraine OIE reported African swine fever (ASF).
Ukraine OIE reported new case of African swine fever (ASF).
Ukraine OIE reported African swine fever (ASF) recurrence, identified in wild boar.
Ukraine OIE reported African swine fever (ASF) outbreak amongst swine.
Ukraine OIE reported new outbreak of African swine fever (ASF).
Ukraine OIE reported new case of African swine fever (ASF).
United Kingdom Highly pathogenic influenza A virus detected.
United Kingdom Reports of first case of bovine foetal deformity due to Schmallenberg virus in 2018 in Northern Ireland.
United Kingdom OIE reported highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N6 found in a greylag goose in Northern Ireland. Sequence analysis indicates high homology to the virus isolated from a buzzard in Northern Ireland on 23rd March 2018.

USA The CDC reported an increase in vector-borne diseases recorded in the USA, with reported cases more than tripling since 2004.
USA - Oklahoma Reports of mosquito found positive for West Nile virus (WNV) in Oklahoma.

Oceania

New Zealand OIE reported new strain of rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD). A dead wild rabbit was tested as part of a monitoring programme and positive for RHDV2.

South America

Argentina OIE reported equine influenza, 70% morbidity.
Brazil OIE reported West Nile fever (WNF). This is the first occurrence of the disease in the country.
Uruguay OIE reported increased numbers of horses showing respiratory signs compatible with influenza.
