Disease Reports of Note Q1 2015

 

The following is a selection of reports through the press and ProMED. This does not include all outbreaks. It should be noted that more reports will be expected from countries with better surveillance systems, and frequency of reporting does not provide an indication of prevalence.

Algeria Sheep pox identified in flocks in the highland regions.
Algeria Foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks, serotype O, confirmed in Algeria.
Argentina 42 million cattle vaccinated for FMD.
Australia Infectious Laryngotracheitis has been confirmed in a backyard poultry flock in the Riverland.
Bahrain FMD detected on the 23rd of February, with the outbreak lasting just under a month. Thirteen farms in total affected.
Brazil In March a couple of municipalities held a desktop and field simulation exercise on avian influenza.
Brazil Brazil vaccinated 97.8% of the 148.8 million cattle and buffaloes that should be immunized against FMD in the 2nd immunization step, performed in the second half of last year.
Botswana SAT1 serotype FMD outbreak confirmed in Ngamiland despite the fact that the cattle were vaccinated in September 2014.
Botswana North West District councillors have been urged to encourage their electorates to comply with the adopted control measures in the form of vaccination and movement control in order to curb the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).
Bulgaria Death of 21 pelicans from H5N1 avian influenza.
Bulgaria Over 1 million sheep vaccinated against Bluetongue.
Canada A woman who had travelled to China was diagnosed with H7N9. This is the first recorded case of H7N9 in humans in North America. Subsequently the husband was also diagnosed with avian flu.
Canada A number of poultry farms in British Columbia under quarantine following avian influenza outbreaks.
China Additional cases of H5N1 and H7N9 in humans.
China Research suggests that H7N9 has become established in animals in China, highlighting the need for more stringent controls of the live poultry trade.
China Two tigers in a zoo die of H5N1 avian influenza.
Ecuador The OIE has announced that FMD is eradicated in the country. The next step is to reach “FMD free without vaccination” status.
Egypt By March 2015 over 115 H5N1 avian influenza cases, with 36 of them fatal.
Egypt First detected case in the country of H9N2 in a human. The patient was a 3-year-old child in contact with a backyard flock.
Ethiopia Serotype O FMD detected in tissue samples from outbreaks.
Germany Low pathogenic H7N7 avian influenza detected in a flock.
Honduras Rabies diagnosed in cattle. Although only one case was reported, a month earlier other cattle had died from similar disease. The animals live in a mountainous rural area with a habitat suitable for bats.
Hungary First outbreak of H5N8 in poultry since 2007, reported in a flock of meat ducks.
India H5N1 avian influenza confirmed in a turkey farm in Kerala.
India Swine flu outbreak in humans, with over 1000 deaths since the start of the year.
India Rabies confirmed in brain samples from 3 dogs that had attacked and killed people.
Israel H5N1 outbreaks in broiler breeders and turkeys.
Israel Novel RNA virus, denominated the Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV), identified as newly emerging pathogen.
Indonesia Based on research conducted in the past one-and-a-half years in a number of commercial poultry centers, Yogyakarta is now free of the H5N1 virus.
Indonesia Two humans in Jakarta infected with the avian flu (H5N1) and died.
Kazakhstan First notification of sheep pox and goat pox. Two sheep in Kaztal District diagnosed by PCR.
Kenya Launch of vaccination drive after confirmation of SAT2 FMD.
Kuwait Lumpy Skin Disease reported on dairy farms, the first occurrence in the country since 1991.
Macedonia Bluetongue serotype 4 confirmed near the city of Doijran.
Mongolia Reoccurrence of FMD reported on farms involving cattle, sheep, goats, and camelidae.
Myanmar H5N1 avian influenza detected in a number of commercial poultry flocks.
Namibia SAT2 FMD diagnosed in cattle. This is the first report of FMD in the country in 6 years.
Nepal A number of people have died from rabies at the Sukraraj Tropical & Infectious Disease Hospital. All patients were bitten by rabid dogs. The ages of patients ranged from 1 to 55 years. All patients were male.
Netherlands H7N7 (LPAI) detected on 2 poultry farms (Barneveld and Friesland).
New Zealand Announced that they would hold an FMD tabletop simulation in March.
Nigeria Serotype A FMD detected in cattle.
Nigeria Avian Influenza detected in 18 states. Government will offer 600 million Naira to compensate the owners of poultry farms hit by avian influenza.
Pakistan Circulation of O, A, and Asia1 serotypes confirmed.
Palestine H5N1 avian influenza outbreak in a layer flock on the western edge of the West Bank.
Paraguay Announced aims to achieve Classical Swine Fever Free Status to be given May 2016.
Philippines The first case of MERS-CoV in the country is reported. The disease was detected in a nurse returning from Saudi Arabia.
Qatar A new case of MERS-CoV reported. The patient has frequent contact with camels and goats.
Romania Held a bluetongue tabletop simulation exercise at the end of March.
Romania Sixty-four wild Dalmatian pelicans found dead, H5N1 confirmed.
Russia Reported an outbreak of rabies in cattle. The farms include several thousand cows and 8 of them were found to have rabies. However, the farm is not yet closed and its products continue to be sold.
Saudi Arabia Disease “similar to foot and mouth” killed nearly 60 sheep.
Saudi Arabia New cases of MERS-CoV continue to appear.
Senegal Samples tested detected FMD serotypes O and A.
South Korea The first case of FMD was reported in December 2014, and since then there have been over 140 cases on swine farms and cattle farms. The strain has been identified as belonging to the serotype O, topotype SEA, lineage Mya-98. In response, South Korea has begun to import vaccine with matching O serotype strains.
South Korea Avian influenza continues to spread, for the first time being identified in Seoul.
South Korea Rare case of avian influenza confirmed in a dog.
South Korea Over 130 cases of HPAI have been detected, and as a result, more than 3 million birds from over 160 farms have been culled. Migrating wild birds are the suspected carriers, and the Korean government said it expects more cases as migrations continue up to April.
Sweden Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N8 found in dead swans in Stockholm. Disease status may have been complicated by lead poisoning.
Taiwan H5N2, H5N8, and H5N3 detected in various farms. Control measures include suspension of sales in markets and banning of killing at slaughterhouses. More than half the geese raised have now been culled, dealing a devastating blow to the country’s goose farmers.
Turkey Avian Influenza tabletop simulation exercise to be held in April.
Turkey Serotypes A and Asia1 found in FMD outbreaks.
UAE New case of MERS-CoV reported.
Uganda Nine districts affected by FMD outbreaks with serotype O and possibly also SAT1. Mbarara district has suspended operations of livestock markets in the district following an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.
UK H7 avian influenza on a farm described as “low severity”.
UK Schmallenberg identified in deformed calves in the South West.
Uruguay Leishmaniosis detected in 2 dogs, leading to further screening in the area.
US A number of outbreaks of H5N8 (HPAI) detected in a number of poultry flocks and wild ducks in multiple states in the Pacific, Central, and Mississippi flyways.
US Outbreak of low-pathogenic H7N3 on several turkey farms in California.
US Kitten in Colorado tested positive for rabies. Twenty people in contact are being given post-exposure treatment.
US Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea reported for the first time in the state of Georgia.
US The USDA has forecast that exports of US poultry will fall almost 3% to 7.3 billion pounds (lb) this year, as the country feels the impact of several avian influenza outbreaks coupled with a strong dollar.
US 2000 snow geese have died in Eastern Idaho from Avian Cholera.
US H5N2 confirmed in a goose found near Cheyenne, Wyoming.
US Kansas: a low-pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) virus has struck a farm in Crawford County near the state's southeastern corner, about 2 weeks after a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus hit a backyard flock in a northeastern county.
US Mosquitoes collected on March 18th tested positive for West Nile Virus, about 2 months earlier than confirmed in 2014.
Vietnam H5N6 highly pathogenic avian influenza reported in the north-east of the country.
Vietnam H5N1 HPAI reported in the south of the country.
Vietnam Sixteen students of a school in Central Highlands region in Vietnam have been tested positive for H1N1.
Zimbabwe SAT2 outbreak reported in cattle.
