Disease Reports of Note Q2 2015


The following is a selection of reports through the press. This does not include all outbreaks. It should be noted that more reports will be expected from countries with better surveillance systems and frequency of reporting does not provide an indication of prevalence.

Algeria The epizootic outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) which began in May is declared resolved.
Angola  Animals found with signs and lesions consistent with Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) disease during routine surveillance.
Australia Simulation exercise on Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination strategy.
Australia A new strain of Bluetongue, serotype 5, is detected in tests. None of the animals showed any symptoms.
Bahrein  Cattle have been diagnosed with Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) on a number of livestock farms and barns.
Bhutan A backyard flock of poultry has tested positive for H5N1 HPAI.
Bolivia A girl died from rabies after being bitten by a pup.
Botswana  Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks with serotype SAT2.
Bulgaria  A 7-year- old child is diagnosed with West Nile Virus (WNV).
Burkina Faso Continued cases of H5N1 detected.
Cabo Verde  First occurrence of African Swine Fever (ASF) virus.
Canada   West Nile Virus  (WNV) found in a sample taken from a mosquito pool.  No human cases reported.
Canada HPAI H5N2 detected in turkeys.
Chile  The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has certified Chile as free of Classical Swine Fever (CSF).
China Several human cases of H5N1 and H7N9, including deaths, are reported.
China Outbreak of H5N6 HPAI in geese.
China Novel H5N9 virus is discovered: the H5 gene coming from H5N1 and the N9 gene from a human-infecting H7N9.
China   New Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak ; 25 cases of the serotype A disease in Hubei province. 
Cote d’Ivoire  H5N1 detected.
Czech Republic  The country ran a simulation exercise on avian influenza (AI) from 1 to 2 July 2015.
Ecuador  The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has reclassified mainland Ecuador as FMD- free "with vaccination" and "without vaccination" for the Galapagos islands.
Ecuador  First occurrence of both American Foulbrood of honey bees and European Foulbrood of honey bees. Both were sub-clinical and detected after active surveillance.
Egypt   Human H9N2 LPAI reported.
Egypt 172% increase in Foot- and- Mouth Disease (FMD) incidents in Egypt.
Estonia New occurrences of African Swine Fever (ASF).
France  Rabies diagnosed in a dog which had been illegally taken on a family holiday in Algeria.
France  The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) declares the country free from Classical Swine Fever (CSF).
Germany Low- pathogenic AI H7N7 reported in birds.
Ghana H5N1 responsible for increased mortality in birds.
Honduras  Rabies virus reported, not typed.
Hong Kong  A Peregrine falcon and Magpie- robin tested positive for the H5N6 Avian Influenza (AI).
Hungary Mandatory vaccinations within a 20- km radius of possible outbreaks of bluetongue.
India A vaccination drive against FMD will be launched in the Bangalore district.
India  Outbreak of Classical Swine Fever (CSF), which occurs every year during the pre-monsoon season (according to an official).
India Bird flu H5N1 outbreaks. To prevent the spread of avian influenza (AI) to humans, the health authorities have provided treatment by distributing Tamiflu (oseltamivir) tablets among the local population.
India  Classical Swine Fever (CSF) and Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) have surfaced in Mizoram, with blood samples of dead pigs testing positive.
Indonesia  Post- dog- bite fatalities now number 9 this year, after the death of a 15- year- old.
Iran  H5N1 reported in backyard farm. Post-outbreak investigation is ongoing to trace the source of infection.
Israel After three months without an outbreak, highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza has returned, affecting a turkey farm in the north of the country.
Israel Rabies diagnosed in a dog known to have bitten humans.
Israel 7 people attacked by a wolf diagnosed with rabies in Northern Golan.
Israel Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) reported in goats.
Japan  H5N8 detected in migratory birds.
Kazakhstan Highly pathogenic H5N1 virus reported.
Kazakhstan Capripoxvirus found in sheep in  east Kazakhstan.
Latvia  Fresh outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) in domestic pigs, confirmed by the The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
Lithuania  Outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) reported.
Lebanon  The UN has launched an emergency vaccination campaign against Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) and goat plague among animals brought to Lebanon by Syrian refugees.
Lebanon  The risk of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and other transboundary diseases, eg, Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), increased dramatically after disruption of vaccine delivery due to the Syrian conflict.
Mauritania  Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks with serotype SAT2.
Mexico H7N3 HPAI reported in two states.
Mongolia Several confirmed cases of Classical Swine Fever (CSF).
Mozambique Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks with serotype SAT2.
Namibia Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks with serotype SAT2.
Netherlands H5N2 identified at a poultry farm.
Netherlands Suspected American Foulbrood of honey bees.
Nicaragua Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) in birds.
Nigeria  Reports of more than 50 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).
Norway  Infectious Salmon Anaemia virus (ISAV).
Palestine A new outbreak of H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been reported.
Peru  Death of 3 children after being bitten by vampire bats.
Philippines  6- year- old boy dies of rabies following bite on the arm two months earlier.
Poland  New outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) reported on pig farms near the border with Lithuania and Belarus.
Poland Equine Infectious Anaemia Virus (EIAV) detected.
Qatar Worker from a camel farm diagnosed with Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV).
Russia  Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak monitored in cattle (FMD virus type A).
Russia Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus H5N1 was detected in a Great Crested Grebe and Dalmatian Pelican.
Slovakia  Red fox near the Velky Lipnik village diagnosed with rabies.
South Africa Low- pathogenic H5N2 outbreak in a number of flocks.
South Africa American Foulbrood of honey bees has killed around 40% of Western Capes bee population.
Saudi Arabia Reports of the first occurrence of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in cattle.
Saudi Arabia Continued cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), including fatalities.
South Korea Continues to fight outbreaks of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), including a cull of millions and a vaccination program.
South Korea New cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) reported.
Spain Spanish livestock farms in Northern and Eastern Spain have been officially declared Bluetongue- free, leaving an infected area to the south- west.
Taiwan 4 outbreaks of the H5N2 serotype of the virus have been confirmed. In addition, there has been one outbreak of H5N8 avian influenza (AI).
Taiwan  Farm infected with Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) , confirmed as A serotype, suspected to have originated from China.
Thailand Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) reported in a patient who had previously been treated in a hospital in Oman.
Tunisia  12- year- old boy died from rabies after being bitten by a dog 3 months ago.
Turkey   Reports first bird flu outbreaks (H5N1) in 7 years.
Turkey  Simulation exercise held on Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) response skills.
Turkey Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) outbreak in European side of Turkey.
Uganda  Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks with serotype SAT2.
Ukraine  First occurrence of African Swine Fever (ASF) virus, found in wild boar and later in an outbreak in backyard pigs.
US  Epidemiological report from Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) suggests that spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the US cannot be attributed to a single factor.
US Amendment of regulations to allow beef imports from Argentina and 14 states in Brazil.
US – Alabama  Unvaccinated dog bitten by raccoon with rabies bites owner.
US – Arizona  Investigating the first cases of avian influenza in the state in birds imported from Iowa.
US – California West Nile Virus (WNV) detected in dead birds and mosquito samples in 10 counties. To date there are no human or horse cases of WNV reported.
US – Georgia  Rabies confirmed in a cat. 
US – Idaho More than 2000 snow geese died of avian cholera.
US – Illinois Mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV).
US – Illinois Outbreak of Canine Influenza (CI) (H3N2).
US – Indiana 1st confirmed H5N8 bird flu strain found in backyard mixed-poultry flock.
US – Indiana Outbreak of Canine Influenza (CI) (H3N2).
US – Indiana West Nile Virus (WNV) confirmed to be positive in mosquito sample.
US – Iowa More than 70 confirmed outbreaks of Avian Influenza Virus (AIV), affecting about 28 million chickens and 1.2 million turkeys. Government declares state of emergency over bird flu.
US – Iowa  Canine Influenza (CI) detected in a dog for the first time in the state.
US – Kansas  First case of West Nile Virus (WNV) .
US – Kansas  Ban of chickens and other birds from county and state fairs.
US – Kentucky H5N2 Avian Influenza Virus (AIV) has been confirmed in two wild birds.
US – Michigan West Nile Virus (WNV) makes its way to mid-Michigan. Three birds tested positive, three crows found dead after being infected early in June.  There have been no human cases so far this year.
US – Michigan Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N2 found in wild geese. Statewide cancellation of all 2015 poultry and waterfowl exhibitions .
US – Michigan Three cases of Canine Influenza (CI) have been confirmed.
US – Minnesota  Canine Influenza (CI) reported in a dog adopted from an animal shelter.
US – Minnesota  Over 100 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N2 among chicken, turkey and mixed-poultry flocks (more than 4.7 million birds have died).   
US – Montana Death of a captive gyrfalcon was caused by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) (H5N2). One week later, H5N2 is detected at a poultry farm.
US – Nebraska  Five cases of H5N2 confirmed.
US – Nebraska A woman was attacked and bitten by a fox with rabies.
US – Nebraska  All poultry events until January 2016 are cancelled.
US – New Mexico  Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) reported in a single duck.
US – New Mexico  First human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in Valencia County. After 24 cases in 2014, the disease is now making an early start in 2015.
US – New Jersey A 6-year-old Sussex County girl was briefly hospitalized with West Nile Virus (WNV).
US – North Carolina  Bird and poultry shows cancelled in the fall owing to risk of avian influenza (AI).
US – North Dakota Avian Cholera kills more than 600 waterfowls.
US – Ohio  Ban on live poultry shows and exhibitions in aggressive move to protect the poultry industry.
US – Ohio Outbreak of Canine Influenza (CI) (H3N2).
US – Oklahoma Two human cases of the West Nile Virus (WNV), no deaths reported.
US – South Carolina  Outbreak of Canine Influenza (CI).
US – South Carolina  Family cat diagnosed with rabies approximately a month after returning home with visible wounds.
US – South Dakota  H3N2 has been confirmed in dogs.
US – South Dakota  Avian Influenza (AI) with more than 1 million birds affected.
US – Texas  Two human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV).
US – Texas  Canine Influenza (CI), H3N2 virus, detected in a dog for the first time in the state.
US – Utah, Arizona  Four horses have tested positive for Vesicular Stomatitis (VS) infection.
US – Wisconsin A number of confirmed cases of H5N2.
US – Wisconsin Canine Influenza (CI) outbreak of H3N2, which is almost identical to its Asian counterpart, and was likely brought to the US by an infected animal.
Vietnam H5N6 reported in poultry flock in Northern Vietnam.
Vietnam New outbreaks of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), ring vaccination implemented.
Vietnam Reports of an increase in human cases of rabies by Thai Nguyen health authorities.
Zambia Mbala district receives funds for a Foot-and-Mouth Disease  (FMD) vaccination campaign.
Zimbabwe Routine farm inspections reveal five outbreaks of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in Matabeleland province.
