The following is a selection of reports through the press.  This does not include all outbreaks.  It should be noted that more reports will be expected from countries with better surveillance systems, and frequency of reporting does not provide an indication of prevalence.

Cameroon

Outbreak of H5N1 in poultry.

Ghana

Outbreaks of H5N1 highly pathogenic Avian Influenza have been reported.

Kenya

Infectious haematopoietic necrosis virus detected in Rainbow trout; first occurrence in the country.

Mali 

Rift Valley fever outbreak; nearly 40 people infected.

Mauritius 

First occurrence of Foot-and-mouth disease in the country. The virus has been reported in cattle, goats, sheep and swine. There are 175 cases, 8 of which have been fatal.

Mozambique 

A case of African Horse Sickness confirmed; serotype pending.

Namibia

First occurrence of Lumpy Skin disease.

Neethling poxvirus in cattle, first occurrence.

Niger

An outbreak of Rift Valley fever; at least 21 human deaths have been reported.

Nigeria 

Another outbreak of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 has been discovered in pullets; 1355 birds have died, another 2645 were destroyed.

South Africa 

A rabies alert has been issued after 2 confirmed human cases of rabies. Two people are receiving treatment after testing positive for rabies.

Togo

Highly pathogenic Avian Influenza virus H5N1 reported.

Tunisia

4 new outbreaks of Peste des Petits Ruminants reported in sheep.

Uganda 

Foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks reported.

Zimbabwe

New cases of Foot-and-mouth disease; according to the local authorities the situation is under control.

Asia

China 

Eight human cases of Avian Influenza A(H7N9) confirmed, one of which was fatal. From 2013 to-date, 775 human cases of Avian Influenza A(H7N9) have been reported by the mainland health authorities. Since October 2015 to-date, 118 have been recorded.

India 

Rabies reported in zoo animals. A total of 33 spotted deer have died of rabies in the National Zoological Park since January this year.

Mongolia

Outbreak of Foot-and-mouth disease in cattle.

South Korea

First case of classical swine fever confirmed in three years. The source of the outbreak is thought to be due to contact with wild species.

Taiwan

Highly pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N8 kills poultry in 3 areas.

Taiwan 

Outbreak of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N2 on a backyard poultry holding.

Europe

[
European Commission recognizes Lumpy Skin Disease as a growing concern and introduces new control and preventive measures to combat the disease. The Commission and the Member States agree on measures to raise awareness on LSD, enable swift vaccination and develop a collaborative approach. The European Food Safety Authority recommends vaccination of cattle as the best disease control measure and a new EU reference laboratory for LSD is selected.

Outbreaks of Bluetongue BTV4 in sheep.

Rabbit haemorrhagic disease reported.

European foulbrood of honey bees; reoccurrence.

Poland

New porcine cases of African Swine fever. One outbreak has been reported on a pig farm.

West Nile virus reported.

European foulbrood of honey bees reported.

Russia 

Several outbreaks of African Swine fever have been reported in farmed pigs and wild boar. The disease is now raging in 13 regions of the country.

Three outbreaks of Classical Swine fever in wild boar.

Bluetongue virus, BTV4, found in sheep.

The outbreak of koi herpesvirus disease was confirmed at a fishery in Worcestershire in England.

A human case of West Nile Virus has been confirmed; the first known case in Kalamazoo County this year.

Health officials confirmed the state's second West Nile virus-related death in 2016.

Eastern equine encephalitis reported in a horse.
