The following is a selection of reports through the press. This does not include all outbreaks. It should be noted that more reports will be expected from countries with better surveillance systems and frequency of reporting does not provide an indication of prevalence.

Algeria

Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H7N1 reported in wild birds, first occurrence in the country.

Egypt

Outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N8 in common coot, new strain in the country.

Guinea-Bissau

Two outbreaks of Foot and mouth disease in cattle. Serotypes confirmed as O and A. SAT1 and SAT2 antigens detected in vesicular fluids.

Foot-and-mouth disease reported in cattle, virus not typed.

Niger

At least 32 people have died since late August in an epidemic of Rift Valley fever in the western Niger region of Tahoua. The mortality rate had fallen from 50 percent three months ago to 14 percent due to a government information campaign.

Nigeria

An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N8, a new strain in the country.

Nigeria

Another outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza has been reported in the Rivers area. The outbreak was of H5N1 virus strain.

South Africa

Outbreak of low pathogenic avian influenza virus H7N2.

South Sudan

Authorities have declared an outbreak of lumpy skin disease after the deaths of 85 cattle have been reported in various locations across the state.

Swaziland

African horse sickness reported.

Tanzania

Outbreak of anthrax in cattle, sheep and goats.

Tunisia

Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5 virus found in wild birds.

China

Outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N6, 11,000 birds dead, 38,000 destroyed.

China

Outbreak of Foot and mouth disease, serotype O, 22 cases. This is the first outbreak since 2013.

China

Additional cases of laboratory-confirmed human infection with the H7N9 strain of avian influenza virus have been reported. A total of 18 people have been infected with bird flu in China so far this winter, at least two of whom have died. According to WHO a total of 800 human cases with H7N9 virus infection have been reported since early 2013.

Georgia

First occurrence of Lumpy skin disease, outbreak reported in cattle.

Hong Kong

Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N6 found in Northern Pintail.

India

Three outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N8 reported. Cases of avian influenza have been found in the Central Park, Hauz Khas and the National Zoological Park in Delhi.

Hong Kong

Two outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza of H5N1 virus reported in Corvidae.

Japan

Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N6 reported, outbreaks in black swan and Corvidae.

Japan

Two outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5, the N-type has not yet been identified yet. These were the first bird flu cases of infection with the H5 strain of virus in in Japan since January 2015. Japanese local authorities began culling a total of about 330,000 chickens and ducks at affected poultry farms.

Kazakhstan

Rabies reported in dogs, two cases.

Laos

Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 reported.

South Korea

Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N6 reported. South Korea has reported H5N1 and H5N8 AI viruses in the past, but it is first to confirm H5N6 case. The countrys bird flu alert status has been raised to the highest level as the disease has spread quickly nationwide. Since the beginning of the outbreak in November South Korea has culled over 12 percent of its poultry population to contain the spread of the virus. The epidemic has caused nearly 3.4 million chickens and ducks to be culled.

Belgium Two cases of bovine tuberculosis reported in cattle.
Belgium A case of brucellosis reported in cattle.
Bulgaria 8 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5 have been reported.
Bulgaria Newcastle disease virus reported for the first time.
Croatia Outbreak of avian influenza virus H5N8 in mute swan reported, a new strain in the country.
Croatia Brucellosis reported in sheep.
Denmark Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N8 outbreak reported in tufted ducks. These are first cases since 2006.
Finland First occurrence of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N8, outbreak reported in tufted duck.
Finland A case of bat rabies has been confirmed, the virus was then identified as European Bat Lyssavirus type 2 (EBLV-2). This is the 2nd case of EBLV-2 in a bat in Finland
France Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N8 was confirmed in wild ducks.
France Outbreaks of low pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 and H5N9, both strains have been detected for the first time in the country.
France Bluetongue, serotype 4 reported. Outbreak in sheep.
France In the second half of October there has been 143 new outbreaks of Bluetongue disease in France reported to the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE). Out of the 143 new outbreaks there was only one related to a flock of sheep, with the rest relating to cattle.
Germany Low pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks of H5N1 and H5N2 virus. These outbreaks are not connected to highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks recently notified in Germany.
Greece Outbreaks of avian influenza H5N8 reported, new strain in the country, virus found in mute swan.
Hungary Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N8 has been reported, two outbreaks in mute swan.
Italy Anthrax reported in cattle.
Moldova African swine fever reported.
Montenegro Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N5 reported, first occurrence in the country.
Netherlands Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N8 reported in wild birds, first occurrence in the country.

Poland Outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N8 has been reported, new strain in the country.

Russia Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5 has been reported, three outbreaks.
Russia Foot and mouth disease outbreak in cattle, serotype Asia 1 reported for the first time. Russia has been declared as FMD free without vaccination across most of the country since 2015 and this is the first outbreak in this free area since then.

Slovakia Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5 reported.
Spain A field simulation exercise took place on 26 and 27 October 2016 to assess the inter-institutional coordination mechanisms when facing biological terrorism threats, the decision-making and implementation of actions in response to crisis situations, as well as reviewing and verifying the national contingency plans against the disease, the response capability of the relevant laboratories and control measures in case of a suspected FMD outbreak.
Sweden Highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus H5N8 has been identified in wild birds in two locations in the southern tip of the country.
Switzerland Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N8 found in tufted ducks at Lake Constance, first outbreak since 2008.
Ukraine African swine fever cases recorded again, outbreaks have been reported on two pig farms. The disease has also been reported in wild boar.
Ukraine Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5 virus reported.
United Kingdom Reoccurrence of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N8 reported. The outbreak has been confirmed on a turkey farm in Lincolnshire and is of the same strain that has been affecting poultry in Europe since November this year.
United Kingdom Schmallenberg virus reported in Wales and west of England. Positive tests for Schmallenberg have been reported in bulk milk from dairy herds, also positive blood samples reported from cattle and sheep.

Middle East

Iran Two outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N8 have been reported.
Israel Outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N8 reported on a farm. Israel is on the migration route of wild birds coming from Europe to Africa. The recent detections of H5N8 in wild birds and domestic birds are additional evidence of the role of wild birds in the long-distance movement of H5 HPAI viruses from one stopover location to another along their migration routes.

Saudi Arabia Foot and mouth disease virus, serotype A, outbreak in cattle and sheep.

North America

US – California The Orange County Health Department reported that a 60-year-old woman died from West Nile Virus. This is the first death from WNV in 2016.
US – Florida New world screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) found in key deer.
US – Iowa State health officials reported the first West Nile virus human death since 2010. So far this year, 33 human cases of West Nile have been confirmed, with several more under investigation. This is more than double the 14 cases reported last year.
US – Mississippi Two new human cases of West Nile Virus have been reported.
US – New York Health officials reported a human case of H7N2 avian flu infection in a veterinarian involved in obtaining respiratory specimens from scores of cats. Human infection with this virus has rarely been reported, with only a couple of instances in the United States in 2002 and 2003. In all cases, illness was described as mild and self-limiting. The New York City Health Department also reported over 100 cats from the city shelters were found to be infected with H7N2 virus.
US – New York Three people were hospitalized and treated for West Nile virus in Suffolk County, the first human cases of the virus in the county this year.
US- Texas Another death from West Nile virus (the first in Grayson County). On October 20th the Texas Department of State Health Services reported 215 cases of West Nile in the state - 146 of those cases are West Nile neuroinvasive disease. Since the start of the year, at least 10 deaths in the state have been associated with West Nile. The reports indicate a drop in WNV cases in human compared to 2015 (275 cases of West Nile in the state, including 16 deaths).
US – Wisconsin First case of a human with the West Nile Virus has been reported since 2008 in Chippewa County.
Panama West Nile virus reported for the first time in the country, 3 outbreaks in Equidae.
