WOAH reported bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) prion, atypical strain, H-type in Marabá in a A 9-year-old bull presenting neurological clinical signs since 18/01/2023. This is the sixth case of atypical H-type BSE registered in Brazil in more than 25 years of surveillance for the disease. Brazil has never diagnosed a classical BSE case, maintaining, since 2012, official recognition by the WOAH as a country of negligible risk for the disease.

WOAH reported highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5 in a South-American sea lion at Playa el Huascar. This is the first detection of avian influenza H5N1 in an unusual host in the national territory (marine mammal). To date, the agent has not been detected in other marine mammals.
