WOAH reported rabies in a dog in Melilla. On 13 May 2023 a young female mongrel greyhound from Morocco was found around Cárabos beach where she bit two dogs. She was captured and transferred to the Observation and Reception Center with signs of aggressiveness and aphonia; signs increased until she developed paresis, incoordination and generalized paralysis; she died on 18 May 2023. Laboratory tests confirmed rabies by immunofluorescence and real-time PCR. The two bitten dogs are vaccinated. In addition, the animal bit three staff members in the observation center who are also vaccinated against rabies.
