WOAH reported rabies in a dog in Melilla. On 13 May 2023 a young female mongrel greyhound from Morocco was found around Cárabos beach where she bit two dogs. She was captured and transferred to the Observation and Reception Center with signs of aggressiveness and aphonia; signs increased until she developed paresis, incoordination and generalized paralysis; she died on 18 May 2023. Laboratory tests confirmed rabies by immunofluorescence and real-time PCR. The two bitten dogs are vaccinated. WOAH reported bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) prion, atypical strain, L-type, in a 9 year old beef type cow in Tennessee, detected as part of the United States’ targeted surveillance program for BSE. The identified animal did not enter food supply channels and did not present a risk to human health.
